Pastoral care is a crucial aspect of ministry, offering community support and spiritual guidance to individuals when they need it most. Continue reading to explore its role, the impact on those in need and how you can immerse yourself in pastoral care.
Pastoral care dates back to the early Christian church, when religious leaders provided support and guidance for the spiritual development of individuals in their community. The role of pastoral care encompasses spiritual guidance, counseling and assistance in times of need. Ultimately, pastoral care helps people find solace and connection during challenging periods in their lives.
Pastoral care is a large part of ministry, with some churches dedicating an entire role or even department to the need. While it is a large aspect of ministry, chaplaincy can be defined by pastoral care.

Chaplains play an essential part in healthcare settings, offering emotional and spiritual support to patients and their families. They participate in a holistic approach to wellness, providing comfort and guidance during difficult times. To ensure the effectiveness of pastoral care, practical experience and chaplaincy training is vital.
At Perkins, we offer students a Healthcare Holy Care course. Here, you can immerse yourself in the world of chaplaincy at the Houston Methodist Hospital (HMH) and its satellites. The Healthcare Holy Care course offers a structured curriculum with daily activities such as lectures, discussions and meditation in the chapel.
During the immersion, you will concentrate on doing pastoral care “in the moment,” while directly shadowing seasoned chaplains, one-on-one. Chaplains offer us their time and expertise to help provide students with a high impact and in-depth engagement.
This course will enable you to enhance your pastoral skills and gain hands-on experience. One unique aspect of the program is bonding time during communal meals, which emphasizes the importance of human connection in pastoral care.
The Perkins Healthcare Holy Care course has made a profound impact on students.
"I’ve been a pastor for a month, and I’ve already made three hospital visits. This morning before preaching, I anointed a deceased woman with oil and prayed with her daughter. I absolutely was ready for that today because of [the] Healthcare Holy Care,” shared Steve Lefevre, past Perkins Healthcare Holy Care student.
Steve’s testimony highlights the critical role this course plays in equipping you with practical skills and understanding for successful and meaningful pastoral care in hospitals, healthcare settings and beyond.
The Healthcare Holy Care course immersion at Perkins provides students with the necessary foundation and understanding, delivering effective pastoral care. If you are interested in pastoral care training and/or theology school, we encourage you to consider enrolling in the course to gain valuable experience and expertise.
Students will receive an introduction to real-world scenarios by working in and visiting the Houston Methodist Hospital. The program lasts for one week, and boxed lunches and housing is provided.
